Gestalt Psychotherapy

Sometimes we can understand something logically, while still feeling emotionally stuck.

You may recognise patterns in yourself, notice the same difficulties appearing in relationships, or feel aware that certain experiences continue to affect you, even though part of you wants to move forward. Gestalt therapy focuses on increasing awareness of what is happening in the present moment, including thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and relational patterns, so that experiences can be understood more fully rather than simply analysed from a distance.

Often, we learn to disconnect from difficult emotions or needs in order to cope. Over time, this can lead to a sense of emotional numbness, anxiety, overwhelm, people-pleasing or difficulty understanding what we truly feel or need.

Gestalt therapy gently encourages awareness of these patterns by exploring not only what you think, but also what you notice happening within yourself as you speak.

How Does Gestalt Therapy Work?

Gestalt Therapy emphasises awareness and personal growth by encouraging you to fully experience the present moment.

Instead of focusing solely on past events or future worries, this approach helps you connect with your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations in real-time.

This might include:

The aim is not to judge or force change, but to support greater awareness and understanding, because when we become more aware of our patterns, there is often more possibility for choice.

  • Focusing on the "here and now" rather than past regrets or future anxieties.

  • Encouraging self-awareness and accountability for thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

  • Recognising how physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts are interconnected.

  • Using creative exercises like role-playing, guided imagery, and dialogue to deepen self-understanding.

This approach can be particularly helpful for people who:

  • feel disconnected from themselves

  • struggle to identify or express emotions

  • experience repeating relationship patterns

  • feel stuck between thoughts and feelings

  • notice strong emotional or bodily reactions

  • want to develop greater self-awareness and emotional understanding

Gestalt Therapy is beneficial if you are struggling with:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Depression

  • Trauma and unresolved emotions

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Self-esteem and self-acceptance

  • Emotional blockages and personal growth

What Can Gestalt Therapy Help With?

How I use Gestalt Therapy to Support Clients

Sessions are interactive and experiential, meaning you may engage in exercises that help you express emotions, explore inner conflicts, or gain new insights about yourself. In our sessions, we might explore how you experience situations here and now.

Rather than exclusively talking about problems, Gestalt Therapy encourages active techniques such as role-play, guided imagery, or exploring body language to bring hidden feelings into awareness. I might encourage open dialogue, creative techniques, and mindfulness practices to help you become more present and self-aware.

Gestalt therapy also recognises the importance of the relationship between therapist and client. The way we relate within therapy can often reflect wider relational patterns, offering opportunities for insight, understanding and change in a safe and supportive environment.

My approach is relational, trauma-informed and paced carefully according to your needs. I work collaboratively, recognising that therapy is not about pushing you towards change before you feel ready, but about creating a space where awareness, safety and understanding can gradually develop.

Alongside Gestalt therapy, I also integrate awareness of the nervous system and embodied experience where appropriate, recognising that emotional patterns are often held physically as well as psychologically.

For many people, therapy becomes less about trying to “fix” themselves and more about understanding themselves with greater compassion and clarity.

I offer Gestalt-informed counselling in Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and online therapy across the UK. Contact me today to find our more.
